& the Bay Area
Where to find specialty orchids, rare species, and beautiful hybrids — from local growers who know what thrives in our climate.
Beyond the Grocery Store Phalaenopsis
Big-box stores carry a narrow selection of mass-produced Phalaenopsis. The Bay Area orchid community offers something far more interesting: hundreds of genera, species collected from cloud forests, miniatures that fit on a desk, and fragrant Cattleyas with blooms the size of your hand — all grown by people who can tell you exactly how to keep them alive in SF's microclimate.
The San Francisco Orchid Society connects buyers with the best local and national specialty vendors through our annual show and monthly meetings.

Orchids as Gifts — A Buyer's Guide
Orchids are the #1 flowering houseplant gift in the US — and for good reason. They last weeks in bloom, come in extraordinary colors, and signal thoughtfulness. For a beginner recipient, a Phalaenopsis or Dendrobium is forgiving. For an experienced grower, a rare species or awarded hybrid from an OITP vendor is unforgettable.
- Phalaenopsis — easiest, longest bloom, widely available
- Cymbidium — spectacular in SF's cool climate, great for gardens
- Cattleya — fragrant, showy, beloved by collectors
- Miniature species — perfect for small spaces and desks
