Orchid Repotting Workshops
in San Francisco
Hands-on repotting instruction from experienced Bay Area growers — the fastest way to level up your orchid care skills.
Why Repotting Kills More Orchids Than Anything Else
Repotting anxiety is real. Orchid roots look alarming — silvery-green when healthy, brown and mushy when not — and knowing which to cut and which to keep requires hands-on experience that no YouTube video fully conveys. SFOS members regularly run repotting demonstrations at our monthly meetings, giving you the chance to work alongside experienced growers and ask questions in real time.
San Francisco's climate adds specific considerations: our cool, humid air means potting mixes break down more slowly than in warmer climates, and roots are more forgiving of slightly damp conditions. Learning these local nuances from growers who've been doing it here for decades is invaluable.
What You'll Learn at an SFOS Demo
- When to repot — and when to leave well enough alone
- Choosing the right potting mix for SF's humidity levels
- How to remove dead roots without damaging healthy ones
- Bark vs. sphagnum vs. semi-hydro — pros and cons for Bay Area conditions
- How to stake and support newly repotted plants
- Aftercare: watering schedule adjustments post-repot

How to Access Repotting Workshops
SFOS does not charge separately for repotting demonstrations — they're part of our regular monthly meeting program, included with membership. Several times per year, our program committee schedules hands-on cultivation workshops where members bring plants and work alongside instructors.
The easiest way to attend is to join SFOS and check our meeting schedule. Guests are also welcome at most meetings — contact us if you'd like to attend before committing to membership.
